BEYOND WASTE. THE BEAUTY OF CORK.
At the core of our cork collection is a material with an extraordinary story. Not only is cork naturally beautiful and highly durable, it is also one of the world’s few truly regenerative, carbon-negative materials. Harvested by hand without ever cutting down the tree, cork forests continue to absorb CO?, support biodiversity, and regenerate their bark for future harvests.
That’s where our story with cork begins.
A CIRCULAR BEGINNING
Our process starts with waste - specifically, discarded cork from the wine industry. What was once a by-product becomes the starting point of our design journey, transformed through a carefully considered circular process:
• Responsibly harvested - Cork is carefully stripped from living trees without harming them, allowing the bark to naturally regenerate.
• Collected and repurposed - Waste cork is recovered and given a new purpose rather than being discarded.
• Finely ground - The cork is processed into fine granules, ready for its next stage of transformation.
• Compressed into solid blocks - Granules are formed into durable, high-quality cork blocks.
• Precisely shaped - Each block is carefully cut to its intended form with minimal waste.
• Reintroduced into production - Any offcuts and cork dust are fed back into the process, ensuring valuable material is reused.
The result is a closed-loop system where material is continuously reintroduced, and nothing is lost unnecessarily.
DESIGNED FOR CONTINUITY
Sustainability is considered at every stage of design. Each product is engineered for disassembly, so components can be easily separated, reused, or responsibly recycled.
This allows the materials to remain in circulation long after the product’s first use.
INSPIRED BY PROCESS
The inspiration behind our modular Tejo collection came during a visit to a cork factory in Portugal. Our Design Director, Paul Crofts, noticed stacks of cork blocks - raw, geometric, and full of potential.
That moment became the foundation for Tejo’s design language: a system built on repetition, adaptability, and resource efficiency.
A MATERIAL THAT GIVES BACK
Cork represents more than a material choice, it reflects a design philosophy. One that prioritises regeneration over extraction, and thoughtful use over excess.
By transforming cork waste into enduring, refined furniture, we are extending the life of the material and keeping it in circulation.
A future shaped by circular design and thoughtful material choices.
