University of Dundee

LocationDundee, UK
ClientBMJ Architects
CompletionNovember 2013

Having previously worked with the University of Dundee’s College of Life Sciences, BMJ Architects were tasked with the creation of the Discovery Centre for Translational & Interdisciplinary Research (CTIR) building.

Forming the primary connection between research and industry, the CTIR houses four storeys of laboratories, offices and meeting spaces. A central atrium sits at the heart of the complex, providing breakout spaces, a networking centre, café and gallery space as well as providing an individual reception area.

To support researchers and visitors while managing a building entry system, a U-shaped configuration of Mono was specified for the reception desk. A second, more linear configuration of Mono was installed for use as the coffee counter within the breakout space. Utilising translucent branding, a molecular graphic was incorporated into the design, mirroring the use of ‘The Scales of Life’ artwork used on the building’s façade.

Sitting in the center of the atrium is the Double Media Unit. Working in conjunction with wall mounted screens, the Double Media Unit encourages interaction with chosen content, achieving the University’s aspiration of breaking down barriers between disciplines and enabling innovation through formal, informal and ad hoc interactions.
